When it comes to warehouse operations, packaging tape might seem like a small detail—but it plays a big role in protecting products, optimizing workflows and controlling costs. Choosing the right tape isn’t just about sticking boxes shut; it’s about selecting a solution that aligns with your operational goals, product types, and environmental conditions.
Here’s a breakdown of how to make the right choice.
1. Understand Your Packaging Environment
Before selecting tape, assess the conditions in which it will be used:
Temperature: Cold storage or high heat environments require specialty adhesives.
Humidity: Moisture can weaken some adhesives, so water-resistant options may be necessary.
Dust and Debris: Clean surfaces are essential for proper adhesion—consider tape with stronger tack if cleanliness is a challenge.
2. Match Tape to Box Type and Weight
The strength of your tape should correspond to the weight and material of your packaging:
Lightweight Boxes (under 20 lbs): Standard acrylic or hot melt tapes are usually sufficient.
Medium to Heavy Boxes (20–60 lbs): Reinforced or high-performance tapes offer better holding power.
Recycled Corrugate: These boxes have a rougher surface and may require stronger adhesives like hot melt or natural rubber.
3. Choose the Right Adhesive Type
There are three main adhesive types used in packaging tapes:
Acrylic: Best for long-term storage and temperature fluctuations. Ideal for e-commerce and retail.
Hot Melt: Offers strong initial tack and quick adhesion. Great for high-speed automated lines.
Natural Rubber: Superior adhesion to difficult surfaces. Ideal for dusty, dirty, or cold environments.
4. Consider Tape Width and Thickness
Width: Standard is 2 inches, but 3-inch tape may be better for heavier loads.
Thickness (Mil): Thicker tape (2.5–3 mil) provides more durability and resistance to tearing.
5. Manual vs. Automated Application
Manual Application: Choose tape that’s easy to unwind and doesn’t split or curl.
Automated Systems: Ensure compatibility with your equipment. Hot melt tapes often work best with automated dispensers due to their consistent performance.
6. Think About Branding and Sustainability
Custom Printed Tape: Reinforces brand identity and can serve as a tamper-evident seal.
Eco-Friendly Options: Look for biodegradable or recyclable tapes to support ESG goals.
7. Paper Tape: A Strong, Sustainable Sealing Option
Paper tape—also known as water-activated tape (WAT)—is gaining popularity in warehouses for its strength, security, and sustainability. Unlike pressure-sensitive plastic tapes, paper tape forms a permanent bond with corrugated surfaces when moistened, making it ideal for high-value or heavy shipments.
Benefits of Paper Tape:
Tamper-Evident Seal: Once applied, paper tape cannot be removed without visibly damaging the box, making it a great choice for secure shipments.
Superior Strength: Reinforced paper tape includes fiberglass threads for added durability, suitable for heavy or bulky packages.
Eco-Friendly: Made from renewable materials and often recyclable with the box, paper tape supports ESG initiatives and reduces plastic waste.
Professional Appearance: Creates a clean, uniform seal that enhances brand presentation.
Considerations:
Requires a Dispenser: Water-activated tape needs a specialized dispenser to moisten and apply the tape.
Higher Upfront Cost: While more expensive per roll, it can reduce overall tape usage and improve sealing efficiency.
Final Thought
Don't forget about the tape gun! For decades the old fashioned spindle style gun has ruled. But, there is a much better option...fast reloading dispensers. Much lighter, better balance, easier to reload and eliminates the tendency for the tape's end to fold back on itself; and they are affordable.
